Meet the Founder

Hi, I’m Adom Mawuena, an Afro-hair growth specialist and the founder of Type4Labs.

I’ve always loved numbers — the logic, the patterns, the clarity that comes from measuring and understanding. When I went on to study Economics and Econometrics, I fell in love with statistics and research methods, with the idea that if you ask the right questions and collect the right data, you can find answers to almost anything.

But even though I was good at research, I wasn’t passionate about the topics I was studying. Year after year, the subject I kept finding myself researching in my spare time was Afro hair.
Why does Afro hair struggle to reach its full length potential and how we can eliminate it for good!

I started to realise that the same tools I used in research — observation, testing, data tracking — could be applied to hair care. So I began to study my own hair like a research project. I measured it, analysed what helped it thrive, and questioned everything we’ve been told about Type 4 hair.

When I was 15, I started a YouTube series called 4C Hair Tested. In my very first video, I conducted an experiment to test how well 4C hair retains moisture and how to improve its moisture retention for long, healthy hair.

Nine years later, I’m still fascinated by growing long, healthy Afro hair. What I didn’t expect was that my findings — the same ones I began exploring at fifteen — would help so many others who shared the same desire to grow their hair from short to long. I’ve spent years testing, documenting, and refining what truly helps Afro hair grow, and now I have a community of women who share the same mission: to grow their hair from short to long and to understand the science behind it.

Today, I specialise in helping Black women grow their hair beyond their genetic potential, turning what started as curiosity into a science.

That journey led me here — to Type4Labs — a research-based Afro hair growth studio where I combine research methods with the lived experiences of thousands of women to make Afro hair growth measurable, repeatable, and deeply personal.

My mission is simple: to prove that with the right data, care, and consistency, Afro hair can exceed its genetic potential.

Welcome to the lab.
